What you should know
Your pet’s teeth should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian for early signs of calculus accumulation, infections, fractured teeth, etc. As with any other illness, early detection allows us to work with you to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.
As your own dentist or dental hygienist has undoubtedly told you, infections in the gums can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, leading to infections anywhere in the body. Infections of the liver, heart, and kidneys are possible, and could be life-threatening. Have your pet’s teeth checked as soon as possible if you notice any of the following problems:
-bad breath
-broken or loose teeth
-extra teeth or retained baby teeth
-teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar
-abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth
-reduced appetite or refusal to eat
-red or puffy gums
-bleeding from the mouth
-facial swelling
